Discover one of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks, the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya. Rising dramatically from the central plains, this 200-meter high rock citadel offers a journey through history, art, and natural beauty. This full-day tour provides a deep dive into the history and legend of King Kashyapa and the architectural marvel he created.
The history of Sigiriya begins in the 5th century AD during the reign of King Kasyapa. To seek refuge from his brother, Prince Mugalan, King Kasyapa built a fortress and a magnificent palace on top of this rock. It was a remarkable creation designed for both defense and royal luxury. After his death, Sigiriya was used as a Buddhist monastery.
These beautiful, ancient paintings of female figures are found on the protected walls in the middle of the rock and hold immense historical and artistic value.
On this wall, you can still see the poems and notes written by visitors who came to admire the frescoes in ancient times.
At the main entrance to the fortress, you can see the colossal paws of a lion and a stairway. This is the main reason Sigiriya is known as the 'Lion Rock'.
Located at the base of the rock, these gardens beautifully showcase the incredible engineering of the ancient water management system.
